Meghan Markle’s renewed Netflix deal a major business risk: ‘terrified’

Meghan Markle’s partnership with Netflix goes much deeper than her show, With Love, Meghan, as it is set to return for the second and third season.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex first signed on with the streaming giant in 2020 after they had stepped down from their senior royal positions. At the time, the lucrative offered the couple a massive upfront payment of $15 million while the remaining had been utilised for creating content.

The five-year contract which is set to expire this year is already set to be renewed but with some major changes, a clear indicator of the prudent steps taken by the company to avoid repeat of their mistakes.

Journalist Esther Krakue pointed out in The Sun’s Royal Exclusive show, that the couple produced the only real successful project with Harry & Meghan, whereas Invictus and Polo did not quite hit the mark with the audiences.

She also noted that the big changes in the deal may now be a result of the regrets the company has with the Sussexes.

“I don't think they’ve got any value for money with this couple,” she said. “It was obviously a business risk taking them on.”

She continued, “I think two years into it, they realised they’d sunk money into the world’s most boring couple that needed a lifetime supply of money to pay for their security. Harry actually said that, he said, ‘I was offered this and I needed to pay for my family's security.”

Elsewhere, Esther shared that Meghan’s content is “not box office in terms of entertainment quality” as she is now afraid to reveal any more personal details especially with the ongoing royal rift.

“I want to know the juicy stuff that should make her interesting, but she's so terrified to tell the public,” Esther stated. “It was clear from the first episode that this is, the way she sees herself and who she actually is are quite different.”
