Michael B Jordan in talks to star as Ricardo Tubbs in new 'Miami Vice' reboot

Universal Pictures’ long-developing Miami Vice reboot is officially gaining traction, sparking renewed excitement around the revival of the iconic 1980s crime drama.

According to multiple reports, Michael B Jordan is in early talks to star as Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs in the film, which will be directed by Top Gun: Maverick filmmaker Joseph Kosinski.

As per Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter that negotiations are ongoing, with Universal eyeing an August 6, 2027, release date.

If confirmed, Jordan would take on the role made famous by Philip Michael Thomas in the original NBC series, while casting continues for his partner, Detective James “Sonny” Crockett.

The film is said to revisit the flashy, dangerous world of 1980s Miami, inspired by the pilot and first season of Anthony Yerkovich’s classic show. The screenplay comes from Eric Warren Singer and Dan Gilroy, based on Yerkovich’s characters, with Kosinski producing alongside Dylan Clark (The Batman).

The original Miami Vice, starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas, became a pop-culture phenomenon, celebrated for its pastel visuals, moody soundtrack, and stylish depiction of Miami’s underworld.

Director Michael Mann previously brought the series to the big screen in 2006 with Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell, earning $163.7 million globally.

Reports indicate Jordan’s name has been attached to the project for several months, with Universal finalising its offer after accommodating his schedule for post-production on The Thomas Crown Affair, his directorial project at Amazon MGM Studios.

Production is expected to begin in 2026 for IMAX release, with Kosinski aiming to modernise the franchise while preserving its signature sleek aesthetic.
