Alexa Demie has played the fan-favourite character of Maddy Perez in Euphoria since the very beginning, but it hasn’t always been an enjoyable experience for the actress.
The 34-year-old icon revealed that she had been contemplating the decision to quit Hollywood for good because of the harsh reality behind the scenes.
The Waves star admitted that even though her HBO show took off, she faced several rejections before, due to her ethnicity.
“I wasn’t booking anything ever. Ever. It was really hard, especially because I feel like a lot of the lead roles I would go out for would go to a blonde-haired, blue-eyed girl,” Demie shared during her appearance at the A24 podcast with Nathan Fielder.
The OA actress has also dabbled in music for a career in the music industry, but that was reportedly no better, and she switched to only acting after getting the Euphoria offer.
Although her iconic performance as Maddy has been much appreciated, Demie recalled that even that role faced doubts earlier, and she had to “prove myself.” She added, "You never see mixed or Latin girl as a lead… I was over people saying ‘no’ to me."
She will be returning to Euphoria season 3, which will be the concluding season of the show, but Demie is unsure about whether or not she wants to work in the industry anymore.
