A two-day training workshop “Zoo Animals Keeping, Zoonoses and Bio-Safety Measures” concluded at the University of Veterinary and Animals Sciences (UVAS) here on Monday.
The workshop was aimed to educate the participants about Zoonotic and infectious diseases that can be transmitted from wild, zoo and pet animals to humans or from humans to wild, zoo or pet animals. Examples of some well-known Zoonotic diseases include measles, smallpox, influenza, HIV, brucellosis, West Nile virus, tuberculosis, salmonella and Lyme disease.
The UVAS Department of Wildlife and Ecology in collaboration with National Association for Young Scientists (NAYS), Pakistan, Pakistan Wildlife Foundation and American Association for Advances in Science (AAAS) USA organised the workshop.
DG-Wildlife & Parks, Khalid Ayaz Khan chaired the concluding session of the workshop and distributed certificates among the participants while Principal Officer Ravi Campus/Dean Faculty of Fisheries and Wildlife Prof Dr Muhammad Ashraf, Shahrukh Butt, Chairman Wildlife & Ecology Department Dr Waseem Ahmad Khan, Dr Arshad Javed and a large number of participants were present.
Speaking on the on the occasion Khalid Ayaz Khan offered auditorium facilities in the Lahore Zoo for such activities in collaborative programs in future.
The participants were also briefed about overview of wildlife of Pakistan and challenges, animal welfare, animal rights and ethics in animal research, Zoo animal diseases and their treatment, wildlife legislation, basics of bio-safety, standard microbiological practices, lab waste management, chemicals safety, bio-safety aspects of biotechnology and nanotechnology research and personal protective equipment and their applications. Meanwhile, a three-day training workshop “Indigenous On-Campus Training (IOT)” began for 4th group of administrative officers in the 2nd phase at UVAS.
The admin officers are being trained on various aspects of their professional matters including good governance, management skills, auditing and communication skills during the workshop organised by the Faculty of Life Sciences Business Management in collaboration with the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Islamabad.
