In a press conference held at the Karachi Press Club on Thursday, the Thalassaemia Federation Pakistan (TFP) announced that a three-day National Thalassaemia Conference will be convened at the Jinnah Postgraduate and Medical Centre from Friday (today).
Over 50 national and international medical experts on blood diseases, hematologists, pathologists and pediatricians would be attending the conference and workshop along with affected children accompanied by their parents will share their experiences faced during treatment of the genetic blood disorder.
The non-implementation of Sindh Prevention and Control of Thalassaemia Act 2013 and latest research in the field of blood diseases are some of the major issues to be discussed at the conference. Dr Saqib Ansari of the Omair Sana Foundation said the conference would be a milestone in preventing thalassaemia and its eradication from Pakistan and hoped that with the joint efforts by the various NGOs, Pakistan would soon be a thalassaemia-free country. However, he criticised the government for not putting optimum efforts in implementing the Thalassaemia Act 2013.
