KARACHI: Mari Petroleum Company Limited (MPCL) has made a significant crude oil, condensate and natural gas discovery at exploration well Kalabagh-1 A STI in Karak Block, KPk/Punjab, a statement said on Friday.
The exploration well Kalabagh-IA STI was spud-in on March 20, 2015 and was drilled down to a depth of 3,003 meters into Datta formation.
During testing, the well flowed 3.3MMSCFD of gas and 160 barrels/day of condensate at Datta formation.
The well was also tested in Samanasuk formation where it again flowed gas and condensate at a rate of 4.68MMSCFD and 180 barrels/day, respectively, with excellent gas heating value.
Further, the testing at Lockhart formation resulted in flow of commercial quantity of crude oil of 500 barrels/day.
Kalabagh-1 A STI is MPCL’s second exploratory well in Karak Block. The company’s first exploratory well Halini-1 had also resulted in a major crude oil discovery back in 2011.
The discovery at Kalabagh-1 A STI has further augmented MPCL’s exploration success rate, which is already the highest in the country.
Discovery at Kalabagh-I A STI will add to the country’s hydrocarbon reserve base and will be another source of indigenous energy supply. The discovery will contribute in bridging the gap between energy demand and supply in the country and help in saving precious foreign exchange. Karak Joint Venture consists of MPCL as operator with 60 percent working interest and MOL with 40 percent working interest as JV partner.
