This refers to the article, ‘Pakistan’s big question’ (August 18) by Ayaz Amir. The writer is right that the tide of terrorism has been reversed and there is semblance of peace and tranquillity in the country. Gen Raheel Sharif became the most popular person in the country after he reenergised the operation in the aftermath of the APS massacre. People were looking towards him as a messiah and reposed full confidence in him.
Though there has been some success against militancy and extremism, not much has been done on the economic terrorism front. The DG Rangers Sindh has been on record as having said that Rs230 billion money is collected in Karachi alone through corruption, extortion, land grabbing, etc, which is used in funding terrorist activities. Scores of mega corruption cases have been pending with NAB/FIA for years but no action was taken on them despite SC orders. While some petty officials and lower level bureaucrats have been apprehended, big fishes have not been touched.
