This refers to the letter, ‘Neo-Ottomanism’ (June 30) by Masood Khan. The election results in Turkey clearly demonstrated that people were fed up with the authoritarian style of leadership. Turkey is the only Muslim country where retrogressive forces are not gaining a strong foothold. In comparison, religious extremism is gradually creeping in liberal Muslim countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia.
In Pakistan, too, extremist forces have not allowed a free hand to the government to revise syllabi, unblock websites or to take any concrete action against those madressahs that are allegedly involved in spreading hatred or helping militants. This is why the developments in Turkey are so pleasing to the ear.
