NOWSHERA: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) nominees were elected district and tehsil nazims and naib nazims on Sunday.
Assistant Commissioner Abdul Hameed was Returning Officer for the district nazims and naib nazim election. Sixty-eight district councillors of the 71-member house cast their votes.
PTI candidate Liaqat Khattak, brother of Chief Minister Pervez Khattak, and the three-party nominee Awami National Party (ANP)’s Khushal Khan, had submitted nomination papers for district nazim.
Ashfaq Ahmed Khan of the PTI and Zahoor Ahmed Kakakhel of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl filed nomination papers for district naib nazim.
Liaqat Khattak polled 54 votes and Khushal Khan secured 13 votes while three district councillors of the ANP, including Jalal Ahmed Khan, Adalat Khan and Tilawat Khan did not cast their votes.
Nazad Ali of the Jamaat-i-Islami and Haider Khan of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) also voted for the PTI candidates. Ashfaq Ahmed secured 55 votes.
PTI’s nominees Murtaza Rehman and Ashfaq Ahmed Khan were elected nazim and naib nazim, respectively. Both got 17 votes each out of 23.
Razaullah Khan and Zar Alam Khan of the PTI were also elected nazim and naib nazim.
Similarly, Sadiq Khan Khattak and Hameedullah Khan of the PTI were elected nazim and naib nazim in tehsil Jehangira.
The process started at 9am and the election started at 2pm after submission and scrutiny of the nomination papers.
All the naizm and naib nazim took oath of their offices after the election concluded on 5pm.
Talking to reporters, district nazim Liaqat Khattak said that his priorities were education, health and agriculture.
He said the provincial government had diverted Rs43 billion to the local governments which would be utilised judiciously.
