The Sindh Home Department has imposed Section 144 on establishing cattle markets in areas other than those designated by the government till September 30, on Thursday.
According to a notification issued by provincial home secretary Mukhtar Hussain Soomro, eight areas had been identified for setting up cattle markets in the Karachi division.
The notification also authorised police officials, not below the ranks of SHO, to register complaints in writing as well as file criminal cases in light of the ban’s violation.
Areas notified for the markets included Super Highway; Malir 15; Asoo Goth; Cattle Mandi, Landhi; Rice Godown, Landhi; Hamdard University, Manghopir; Mowach Goth, Baldia Town; Cattle Mandi permitted by Station Commander Karachi, within the limits of Clifton Cantonment Board; Cattle Mandi permitted by Karachi Cantonment Board president, within the limits of the Board.
The city commissioner, in his statement said the ban was imposed to avoid traffic congestion, unhygienic conditions and security issues.
However, as is the case every year makeshift cattle markets were reported to have appeared in areas including Safoora Chowrangi, Jheel Park and surroundings of Tariq Road, Burns Road, Pakistan Chowk and other places of old city areas.
