Despite a pleasant change in the weather, various public and private hospitals reported 11 more deaths due to heatstroke and related illnesses; raising the death toll to 1,267 in the metropolis, on Tuesday whereas the Aga Khan Hospital claimed to have received at least 17 more patients.
The PM, however, made his first visit to the city almost two weeks after the metropolis was gripped by the intense heat wave, to ascertain the situation at the health facilities and to inquire about the 12-14 hours of announced and unannounced power failures in several areas in the city.
Sindh Director General Health informed that five deaths were reported at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), three at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH), and one each at the Civil Hospital (CHK), Sindh Government Hospital and a private hospital.
As per the record available with the health officials, the death toll due to heat stroke, dehydration and diarrhoea touched 1,267 and 1,277 in Karachi and Sindh respectively.
AKU patients
A spokesman for the Aga Khan Hospital said informed that at least 17 more patients were brought to the facility, raising the total number of patients treated at the hospital to 540; 31 patients had died during treatment at the AKUH.
Hundreds of heatstroke patients were still being treated at different public and private hospitals although the number of patients had considerably dropped. However, the frequent electricity shutdowns continued to plague the city as most of the areas remained without electricity for several hours.
