The Sindh Rangers on Thursday claimed to have arrested the killer of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) worker Waqas Shah from Qamber Shahdadkot; he was mysteriously shot dead on March 11, 2015 during a furore caused after the raid on the party’s headquarters.
A spokesman for the Sindh Rangers claimed that accused, Asif Ali, was a member of the MQM and had served as in-charge of the party's Unit-F in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, adding that he also used to collect extortion money from area residents on the pretext of installing barriers for the locality’s safety.
The spokesman added the accused had reached the Nine Zero along with his wife after he learnt of the raid through media channels, and had tried to provoke Rangers personnel by chanting slogans against them and later fired at Shah at an appropriate moment by his own pistol, the official added.
After shooting him the accused along with his accomplice diverted the media’s attention towards the deceased’s body and alleged that he was shot dead by an official of the paramilitary force, he further claimed.
The spokesman alleged the accused had tried to conspire against the Rangers’ and hatched a conspiracy in order to make their operation controversial.
After killing Shah, the accused dumped his pistol into a nullah near Yasinabad, he said.
The Rangers official further stated that the accused had after seeing himself in a video footage tried to make contact with MQM Coordination Committee members Dr Farooq Sattar and Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui who had asked him to reach Nine Zero and promised to hold a press conference in his defence; however, nobody met him and neither was any conference held.
The accused then left for the interior of Sindh where he took shelter in Shahdadkot. The spokesman claimed to have arrested the accused on a tip off.
The spokesman further alleged that the accused had previously been injured in an armed clash with the workers of the Awami National Party (ANP) in 2012 over a dispute on extortion money whereas he had also served as a member of the MQM election cell during the 2013 general elections and had cast several bogus votes; the accused had allegedly also confessed to have collected sacrificial hides and Fitra from citizens forcefully.
