Punjab govt to mull over uniform fee in varsities

LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly was told on Thursday the government would consider implementing a uniform fee structure in all universities of the province.
Responding to a question raised by JI Parliamentary leader Dr Wasim Akhter and Nabila Hakim of the PTI in a question hour session related to Higher Education Department, Mehwish Sultan admitted that legislation was needed to regulate private institutions. An opposition member criticised the Punjab government for ignoring the education sector and merely deceiving the nation in the name of ‘Parha Likha Punjab.’
Opposition member Shahab ud Din Khan said despite tall claims by the PML-N government, due attention wasn’t paid to the education sector. Expressing his concern in the question hour session which was related to the Higher Education Department, Sardar Shahab ud Din Khan, the PPP legislator from Layyah, said there was not a single degree college in his constituency. He said the present government was coming up with its third annual budget but no measures had been taken to set up a boys or a degree college in the area. He also demanded allocations for setting up a degree college in his constituency.
Parliamentary Secretary for Higher Education Mehwish Sultan answered queries of members in the absence of Minister Rana Mashood. The session started with a delay of over two hours with Deputy Speaker Sher Gorchani in the chair.
