Metro train stations to be in harmony with historical buildings

LAHORE: Steps are underway for bringing the design of four stations of metro train in harmony with the appearance of nearby historical buildings, in line with the directions by the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

Miniature construction of a replica of one level of Shalamar Garden has already commenced at the relevant stations. Adviser to the Chief Minister, Punjab and Chairman of the steering committee for Lahore Orange Line Metro Train Project (LOMTP) Khawaja Ahmad Hassaan told reporters after a meeting of the committee of experts, constituted on court orders, for this purpose.

He informed that comprehensive proposals for synchronising the modern structure of these stations with the heritage buildings had been prepared and handed over to the committee of experts for approval. The committee had specially been constituted for this purpose by the court, he added.

He told that the Shalimar Station, the UET station near Gulabi Bagh, the Chauburji Station and the Samanabad Station near Zaib-un-Nisa’s tomb were being adorned with archways, floor patterns, decorative tiles, replica of monuments as well as horticulture work. Face-lifting of the façade of buildings and shops, situated in front of the main gate of Shalamar Garden will also be carried out under this plan, he added.

Khawaja Ahmad Hassaan also visited Mehmood Booti station of Orange Line Metro Train and inspected the functioning of various equipment installed there. Members of the committee of experts, Secretary Auqaf, Punjab Ch Ijaz, Director General LDA Zahid Akhter Zaman, Principal National College of Arts Prof Mustafa Jaffery, architect Khalid Rehman, Chief Engineer LDA Asrar Saeed and other officers concerned accompanied him.

As per the plan, the tile mosaic motifs of the Gulabi Bagh Gateway will be replicated on the nearby UET station to create harmony with the historic gateway. The area around Chauburji Gateway will be properly attended and developed into a green belt. The decorative motifs of Chauburji Gateway will be replicated on the nearby station.

The area around Zaib-un-Nisa`s tomb will be properly attended and developed. The decorative motifs of Zaib-un-Nisa`s tomb will be replicated on the nearby Samanabad station.

MoU: Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute and Research Center (PKLIRC) Thursday inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to share clinical data withInternationalPharmacovigilance Centre (IPC), Sweden.

According to a press release, PKLIRC CEO Prof Dr Saeed Akhter and Punjab Drugs Control Additional Secretary Sohail Ahmad signed the MoU. Dr. Amer Yar Khan, Muhammad Ahmed, Liaqat Ali, Rana Shakeel from Provincial Drug Control Unit (PDCU); PKLIRC Chief of Pharmacy Dr Mohammad Asif Khokhar, Dr Ali Qadeer Butt, Dr Mukarram Sajjad and Dr Anum Raza were also present on the ceremony.

Under the MoU, PKLIRC will contribute for better pharma research globally by sharing clinical data with IPC. The IPC works under World Health Organisation to collect ADR and other clinical globally.

seminar: University of Education (UOE) Thursday organised a seminar on “Drugs Control”. According to a press release, Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) Regional Director (Punjab) Brig Khalid Goraya highlighted the current scenario of Pakistan regarding drugs consumption, its effects and efforts of ANF to eradicate this menace. He said six per cent of population was addicted to drugs which was very alarming. He said drugs addiction had become a national threat as it was spoiling the youth. Brig Khalid said during the last 5 years, the ANF Punjab registered 1,421 cases and arrested 1,849 persons involved in drugs cases. He said the ANF was not only working for the eradication of drugs but also providing treatment to the addicted people.

Vice-Chancellor Dr Rauf-i-Azam urged the students to play their role in eradication of drugs. He said the university had become a smoking-free zone since the last three years. The university’s Student Affairs Director Dr Omer Saleem also spoke on the occasion.
