LONDON: Tennis legend Roger Federer had a stellar season last year, winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon to finish second in the ATP rankings behind Rafael Nadal, reports foreign media.

The 36-year-old has surprised everyone by rolling back the years and has started this campaign in a similar fashion, regaining his world No 1 crown. And one thing fans can be assured of is the Swiss’ success was all above board as he underwent more than 14 anti-doping tests last year alone. Figures released by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) show he was checked more than seven times during competitions and more than seven outside.Federer’s rival Nadal was similarly tested in excess of 14 times, as was Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic - despite their absence with injuries. The Swiss’ dominance of the sport - despite his age - is all thanks to the work he puts in looking after his body.

And women’s veteran Lucie Safarova admitted this week she would love to know Federer’s secrets to help her continue competing well into her 30s. “I wouldn’t mind if he [Federer] gives me some tips,” she told reporters at the Dubai Open. “He is such a hero when it comes to planning and conserving his body.“In general, I think all the developments in the physiotherapy and fitness industry has helped us take better care of our bodies. “That is how we get a chance to prolong our careers.”
