Police on Monday arrested 36 suspects who stormed into houses situated in Allah Bux Goth and beat up the occupants with rods, sticks and sledgehammers.

Around 50 attackers attempted to forcefully take possession of the houses that they claimed were their property, said SITE Super Highway police SHO Sohail Khan.

The assailants thrashed residents and also broke down walls of houses, he said. However, as the police reached the site after being called in by the residents through helpline, 36 attackers were rounded up, while the others managed to make a getaway, the SHO said.

The arrested suspects insisted that they were the real owners of the houses, he said. But the people living in the homes also showed to the police the possession documents, he added.

SHO Khan said an FIR had been registered against the arrested suspects, while a separate FIR was also lodged against one of the suspects, Tariq Hameed, who was carrying a 9 mm pistol with six rounds.

The paramilitary force apprehended eight suspects, including alleged street criminals. A spokesman for the Sindh Rangers said five suspects were arrested during raids in Ittehad Town, Gulberg and North Karachi Industrial Area. The arrested men were identified as Mohammed Hashim, Tariq, Mohammed Burhanullah alias Burger, Mohammed Amir alias Panda, and Asif Ahmed alias Anaa, he said.

They were wanted for cases pertaining to armed robberies and other offences, he said. During a raid in Brigade area, the Rangers arrested three alleged drug pushers who were identified as Fareedul Haq, Mohammed Salman and Mohammed Ehsaan alias Bengali, the spokesman said. The suspects were also involved in street crime cases, he added.
