Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Lieutenant General Omar Mahmood Hayat urged India to share information on water outflows from its rivers and actual rainfall recorded on time as stipulated in the Indus Water Treaty.

He was chairing an inter-agencies meeting on the monsoon flood mitigation efforts here on Wednesday. The NDMA chairman said it was the obligation of India as upper riparian to share information on its rivers' outflow with Pakistan.

He asked the Pakistan Commission for Indus Water to enhance coordination mechanism of early warning arrangements for release of water, especially from the eastern rivers. Lieutenant General Omar said the authority was taking necessary measures to enhance national resilience against disasters and to ensure the safety of human lives, properties and developmental infrastructure.

The NDMA is the lead agency at the federal level to deal with the whole spectrum of disaster management activities. Its annual monsoon preparedness activities range from the holding of high-level regional consultative process to the holding of the National Monsoon Preparedness Conference culminating at the issuance of National Monsoon Contingency Response Directive before the start of the monsoon season.
