NOWSHERA: The councillors belonging to opposition parties on Thursday staged a protest against the non-provision of development funds and excessive power outages in the district.

The protesters were carrying banners and placards inscribed with slogans against the non-provision of funds to the councillors of opposition parties and unannounced and prolonged power cuts.

The protesting councillors belonging to Awami National Party (ANP) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) blocked a one-way road at the Shubra Chowk for traffic to record their protest.

District Councillor Zahoor Ahmad Kakakhel of the JUI-F and Mustaq Ahmad of the ANP were leading the protesters. The speakers alleged that the district nazim was ignoring the councillors from the opposition parties in distribution of development funds.

They said the opposition parties were being pushed against the wall. The protesters warned to march on the private residence of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan in Banigala in Islamabad if the councillors of opposition parties were not given development funds.

Meanwhile, the District Nazim Liaqat Khattak rejected the allegations, saying the claims of the opposition councillors were wrong. He said there was not any provision in the Local Government Act 2013 to give funds to any councillor straightaway. District nazim said that funds would be spent on the development projects in the district.
