PESHAWAR: Elected representatives of the local governments on Monday staged a protest against the government for its failure to release development funds and honourarium.
The protesting representatives locked the offices of the Local Government Department, including that of Mayor Zubair Ali. Speaking on the occasion, they said the government amended the LG Act and deprived them of the development funds.
The protesting representatives said development schemes were being completed by local government across the world but in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa the previous government dishonestly amended the act and deprived the masses of uplift projects being carried out by their representatives at the grassroots level.
They said that people had elected them to carry out uplift work at the local level but the bureaucracy was denying them the development funds which had created difficulties for them. The protesting representatives forced the employees to leave the offices and locked them to register their protest. They warned of a protest outside the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on May 7 if their demands were not met.
