Police raid PTI meeting at Hashmi’s residence

The meeting was called to support the PTI candidates in NA-151 Multan-IV, but the police foiled the attempt

MULTAN: Police reportedly 'sabotaged' a PTI meeting called by senior politician Javed Hashmi at his residence in Makhdoom Rashid Friday.

The meeting was called to support the PTI candidates in NA-151 Multan-IV, but the police foiled the attempt, arresting four individuals and registering cases against more than two dozen persons, including Hashmi’s grandsons and workers. PTI vice-chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi’s daughter Mehrbano Qureshi and Hashmi’s grandson Shahid Bahar Hashmi are contesting for the provincial assembly.

Makhdoom Rashid police have arrested 36 people, including two sons-in-law and two grandsons of senior politician Javed Hashmi. The case was registered at Makhdoom Rasheed police station on the complaint of SHO Inspector Muhammad Amin. The accused were charged with interfering with the government, assaulting the policemen, and organising a workers’ convention without permission. Eight workers were also arrested during the convention on Thursday night. The First Information Report No. 167/24 registered at Makhdoom Rasheed police station stated that SHO Inspector Muhammad Amin was on patrol in Makhdoom Rasheed and observed some people holding a workers’ convention and chanting slogans against government institutions.

When the police party arrived, they chanted slogans against the police, and some individuals attacked the police party with clubs. The agitated mob also shouted against institutions. However, the police encircled the mob and arrested eight people from the spot, identified as Shahid Bahar Hashmi, Qasim Shahid Hashmi, Imran, Umar Farooq, and four others.

Police nominated 32 more persons — Muhammad Sarfraz, Asad Mehmood, Sheikh Sumair Afzal, Hamza Salim, Muhammad Salim, Talib, Shakil, Muhammad Sunny, Shahid Rehman, Zahid Bahar Hashmi (son-in-law to Hashmi), Arslan, Adnan Hashmi, Khalid Hashmi, Zeeshan Shah, Tausif Shah, Shah Syed Hashmi, Muhammad Shah Hashmi, Zeeshan Shah, Kosar Shah, Aleem Shah, Faiz Mustafa, Azam Khurshid, Farooq Shah, Shazib Shah, Dilawar, Jawad, Azam Khurshid, Ahmed, Rana Waqas, Muhammad Tariq, Malik Ghulam Hussein, Hassnain Shah, Sarat, Master Javed Hashmi, Ahmed Shah, Talha Shah, and Shah Rukh. The FIR has invoked sections 186, 353, 148, and 149.
