KARACHI: Transgender activist, model Kami Sid has starred in a star in short film 'Rani' which is due to premier in Karachi in March at the 10th Karachi Literature Festival according to sources.
'Rani' is a unique story about a transgender Pakistani woman who faces many challenges , yet is determined to do the right thing. The story is set in the heart of Karachi.
The transgender activist used her fashion shoot with photographer Haseeb M Siddiqui to highlight the need for the mainstreaming of Pakistan's transgender community.
The film, has been directed by US-based director Hammad Rizvi and produced by Karachi-based production house .
According to the actor, “People still tend to hide a lot of important topics in our films and dramas".
However it is unfortunate that projects on subjects like these, which are also a part of our society are usually either attacked by critics or not allowed to go on air .
The punch line of the story is basically aimed at breaking stereotypes.
In Pakistan, it’s a common perception that trans people are only meant to entertain at functions.
Rani does a commendable job of breaking that, it creates and awakens viewers to bring a new concept that transgender's are a part of our society and can earn a respectable living just like any other citizen.
