LONDON: The dynamic couple of Akshay Kumar and lady-love Twinkle Khanna have always advocated women empowerment by creating awareness with their production on issues that are taboo.
The actor’s upcoming movie ‘PadMan’ with Sonam Kapoor aims to do the same. It talks about menstruation and the stigma attached to it.
It was only recently that Twinkle Khanna, producer of the movie, was invited to speak about the issue at the Oxford University Union.
Taking the occasion to eradicate misconceptions surrounding the natural phenomenon that concerns all women, Twinkle said, “I hope this movie (PadMan) becomes a movement where women are no longer held back or shamed for their biological functions.”
Present at the talk was Pakistan’s Malala Yousafzai, world’s youngest Noble Peace laureate, who showed support for the actor-turned-columnist’s first venture as a producer.
Twinkle even shared with Malala the importance of shattering taboos that revolve around menstruation.
She said, “My primary motivation to make a movie on menstruation was to bring awareness to a subject that so far has been tucked away in shadows and like Voldemort is never mentioned."
PadMan is slated for release on February 9. It is dubbed as the first film in the world that highlights menstrual hygiene as an important topic to raise awareness for.
