Earl Spencer wife speaks about his 'resilience and determination' amid war of words with King Charles

Princess Diana’s brother Earl Spencer has sparked fresh row with King Charles with his bombshell claims in the book published on Tuesday.

Spencer has alleged in the memoir that the then-Prince Charles told him "rest assured, we'll forget her soon enough."

King Charles took the unusual step last week of responding to criticism by the brother of his late first wife Diana, saying via a spokesperson that grief could impact reason, judgment and memory.

Diana was killed at the age of 36 when the car carrying her crashed in Paris as ⁠it sped away from chasing paparazzi photographers on motorbikes.

The reported comments were made in an argument over whether Diana and Charles' children, Prince William and Harry, should walk behind her coffin during her funeral — something Spencer objected to, the report ⁠said.

Amid this war of words, Prof Cat Spencer took to Instagram and shared a photo of her husband Earl Spencer with heartfelt message.

She said, “Happy publication day, @charles.earl.spencer!”

“I am incredibly proud of you,” she said and added “I’ve been endlessly impressed by your resilience and determination this past year, from the moment you decided to go ahead with this project: all those mornings you got up at 4am to write; some days the memories you unearthed were glorious, others they were utterly heartbreaking.”

Charles Spencer married archaeologist and TV host Cat Jarman in an Arizona ceremony in May 2026.

Jarman continued, “I’m so pleased people can finally read Swan Song for themselves and get a glimpse into the sister you wrote this book for. I feel very lucky to be by your side.”
