Jameela Jamil reacts to Ed Sheeran controversy with 'Godmother Diana' remark

Jameela Jamil weighed in on the controversy involving the removal of rapper Macklemore from Ed Sheeran’s US tour.

While the actress did not defend Ed Sheeran against the outrage he has faced over the US rapper’s removal due to his pro-Palestine stance, Jameela Jamil stressed the need to also hold other powerful figures accountable for their silence on the conflict.

“All jokes aside... let’s take this energy we have for Ed and spread it to all the people with IMMENSE power and platforms, not using their voices at all, even 3 years in. I learned that from my Godmother Diana. Doesn’t matter what she’s a princess of. Not important,” she wrote in the caption of her Instagram post.

The post itself featured the text: “You didn’t hear it from me but... I heard Kamilah will be standing in as support for Ed.”

This was a reference to the NBC series The Good Place, in which Jameela Jamil played Tahani Al-Jamil. Kamilah, Tahani’s highly successful and overshadowing older sister, was played by Rebecca Hazlewood.

Jameela Jamil’s “Godmother Diana” remark also left some people wondering whether the late Princess of Wales was really her godmother.

Princess Diana was not Jameela Jamil’s godmother. She most likely used the name as a sarcastic nod to the idea of using status or privilege for advocacy, while at the same time implying that one does not need power or status to speak out on issues that affect people.
