Macron champions European space independence at Paris summit as US aerospace giants pull out

French President Emmanuel Macron has kicked off the inaugural International Space Summit in Paris, seeking to galvanize a unified European push for strategic autonomy and industrial competitiveness in orbit, even as transatlantic friction cast a shadow over the event.

The two-day summit, convened alongside special envoy and astronaut Thomas Pesquet—brought together international delegations, policy-makers, and industry leaders to address sustainable orbit management, security, and independent launch capabilities.

 However, the proceedings were upended when major American commercial space operators, including SpaceX, Blue Origin, Stoke Space, and Starcloud, abruptly canceled their participation.

 Industry insiders and French officials indicated the sudden pullouts followed intense regulatory and political pressure from Washington.

The diplomatic turbulence highlights growing transatlantic competition over satellite spectrum access, sovereign launch procurement, and Brussels' proposed EU Space Act—legislation that U.S. officials argue could disadvantage American competitors. 

Despite the high-level absences, European officials stressed the urgent necessity of developing independent rocket-launch infrastructure and indigenous satellite communications networks to insulate the bloc from external supply-chain vulnerabilities.

Macron’s administration maintains that Europe must secure its own path in the rapidly commercialized space economy, balancing collaborative global science with rigorous industrial self-reliance.
