Virginia congressman speaks out after VSU shooting leaves 5 injured

Virginia Congressman Bobby Scott expressed concerns after a deadly shooting at Virginia State University left five people injured, including one severely wounded.

"I am closely monitoring the disturbing situation at Virginia State University and keeping those injured in my thoughts,” he wrote.

Then, Rep. Scott shifted to what he said were obstacles in his efforts to reduce gun violence.

"I serve as a co-chair of the House Democratic Task Force on Gun Safety, and we have several policy proposals to reduce gun violence, many of which have been stonewalled."

"We must do everything we can to prevent tragedies like this from happening in the future," he penned on X.

On the other hand, a statement from Virginia State University said the campus lockdown has been lifted, while the gunfire occurred outside VSU residence halls.

"Officers responded to the 3300 block of Boisseau Street at approximately 1:28 a.m. and discovered five individuals suffering from gunshot wounds outside VSU residence halls," the statement read.

Although the lockdown has been lifted, university officials told staff and students that authorities will remain on campus during the investigation.

The message said, “Although the lockdown has been lifted, members of the VSU community are asked to remain mindful of the ongoing law enforcement activity and avoid the immediate area where investigators are processing the scene."

According to ABC News, Chesterfield County Police are leading the case. 

At the same time, other agencies, including Virginia State University Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, will assist.
