Scarlett Johansson goes unfiltered about Hollywood's red carpet expectations early in her career

Scarlett Johansson is looking back on how much Hollywood's red carpet culture has changed since the start of her career.

Appearing on Good Housekeeping's Home in Five series, the actress said celebrities today have far more freedom to express their personal style than they did two decades ago.

"Actors are able to express their personal style on the red carpet much more than they ever did before," Johansson said.

The 41-year-old recalled that when she first began attending major events more than 20 years ago, there were strict expectations about how female stars were supposed to dress.

"There was such a standard on how movie stars were supposed to look," she said. "It was unachievable and it didn't allow for personal style in the same way."

Johansson also lauded changing attitudes toward beauty, saying it's now common to see people confidently wearing pimple patches, eye masks and other skincare products in public.

"Now at the airport or on the train, you see people wearing pimple patches and eye masks and whatever they want to feel confident," she said.

The actress, who launched her skincare brand The Outset in 2022, has previously spoken about becoming more comfortable with her personal style as she's gotten older.

Speaking to Vogue in 2022, Johansson said she finally felt "most like myself" in her late 30s and hoped her evolving sense of style would continue to mirror her personal growth.

She also admitted that fashion initially felt unfamiliar when she attended her first Met Gala in 2004 and called the event a completely new world at the time.
