WestJet flights to resume after tentative deal ends flight attendants strike

The WestJet flight attendants' strike has ended after the airline and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 8125 reached a tentative agreement following overnight negotiations.

The two sides announced the deal at 4:15 AM [Mountain Time] on Monday, bringing an end to a strike that began just after midnight on Sunday.

“This tentative agreement represents meaningful progress. It evolves the flight credit system by recognizing more of the work cabin crew are required to perform and with general increases to compensation for that work,” CUPE Local 8125 president Alia Hussain said in a statement.

“Most importantly, this agreement was achieved through collective bargaining at the negotiating table.”

WestJet chief executive Alexis von Hoensbroech said: “We are pleased to have reached a tentative agreement that reflects the hard work and professionalism our cabin crew.”

The dispute centred on pay for duties carried out on the ground, including boarding passengers, safety checks and managing delays.

Neither side has released details of the agreement. However, Global News reported that WestJet's latest proposal included a 13 percent pay rise from October 1, backdated to January 1, 2026, along with annual increases and additional duty pay.

Although the strike has ended, flights are expected to resume gradually as aircraft undergo safety inspections and schedules are restored.

The tentative agreement must also be approved by union members before it becomes final.
