Tonda Eckert: FA charges Southampton boss over 'Spygate' scandal

The Football Association (FA) has officially charged Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert with three counts of misconduct following an investigation into English football's recent "Spygate" scandal.

The English soccer body alleges he authorised the observation of training sessions of Oxford United, Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough ahead of their matches against Southampton last season.

Rule Violation:

The FA alleges that Tonda Eckert breached Rule E3.1 by acting in an improper manner and bringing the game into disrepute.

Alleged Conduct:

The governing body states that the 33-year-old German manager authorized and directed staff members to covertly observe opposition training sessions.

Fixtures Involved:

The charges stem from three separate incidents during the 2025/26 season prior to matches against Oxford United FC (December 2025), Ipswich Town FC (April 2026), and Middlesbrough FC (May 2026).

The FA announced action against the 33-year-old German, who has accepted “full responsibility” in this case.

An Independent Disciplinary Commission said in May that Eckert had admitted to signing off on the plan, which led to Southampton's expulsion from the Championship playoff final.

Tonda Eckert publicly apologized, explaining he was unaware the practice violated English rules, as spying on rival sessions is common practice in Germany.

Southampton owner Dragan Solak confirmed Eckert will retain his position, expressing full support as the club focuses on securing Premier League promotion.

"Tonda and the club will continue to cooperate fully and openly with The FA," Southampton said in a statement acknowledging the charge.

"The club remains fully supportive of Tonda and his staff as we work towards our ambition of returning to the Premier League."

Consequences:

Notably, Tonda Eckert has been given a deadline until Tuesday, July 28, 2026, to respond to the charges. 

If found guilty, he could face consequences ranging from financial penalties to a touchline ban.
