Piers Morgan says 'it doesn't make sense' after CCTV shows Ann Widdecombe murder suspect

Piers Morgan has raised key questions over the ongoing investigation into Ann Widdecombe as confusion clouds the timeline.

The former Conservative MP and Reform UK spokesperson was found dead at her home in Hayton, Devon, on July 9 2026. According to police preliminary investigation findings, the 78-year-old was attacked at approximately 12:30 pm on July 8, nearly a day earlier her body was discovered on July 9. Authorities have reported that she sustained serious injuries resulting from blunt force trauma to her head.

The law enforcement authorities detained a 26-year-old man as a suspect in the murder. Later he was released after the police confirmation.

On July 11, police also arrested a 28-year-old man, a white British national, in South Yorkshire on suspicion of her murder. In the investigation, it was found that the man in question is believed to have driven almost 300 miles to Widdecombe's Dartmoor home with a "wooden stick" on the morning of her death.

As the police officials are trying to solve the murder mystery, Pierce Morgan has voiced the concerns over the events tied up to the murder.

On X, Morgan said, “None of this Ann Widdecombe story makes any sense.”

His remarks come as the latest CCTV footage showed the suspect who was appearing to get into a car in Yorkshire, hours before the death of Widdecombe.

In the footage as reported by the Sun, a man dressed in a white shorts and shirt can be seen entering a red car. In one of his pockets of shorts, one can also see a long object protruding from his pocket.

Speaking about the approach, Devon and Cornwall Police Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman stated that detectives are maintaining an "open-minded" approach regarding the motive for Widdecombe's murder, noting a current lack of evidence linking the crime to terrorism or political motivations.

“At this point, there is still no information to suggest that this is a terrorism-related incident, and at this point we are not looking at anyone else in connection with this murder,” they added.
