Lil Nas X has shared a positive update after much work on his mental health, saying he is doing much better after months in rehab.

The two-time Grammy winner shared the update in a recent video uploaded on Instagram, saying he recently returned home to Atlanta to spend time with his family.

The update comes nearly a year after he was arrested in Los Angeles after a mental health crisis.

Earlier this year, a judge allowed Lil Nas X, whose real name is Montero Hill, to enter a mental health treatment programme that could lead to the charges against him being dismissed.

At the time, the 27-year-old singer had revealed that he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

He said he had suspected he had the condition for several years but was reluctant to accept the diagnosis.

Lil Nas X also admitted he did not want to take medication and worried about how people might view him.

"I feel like I had known for like the past few years, but I didn't want to admit to it because I didn't want to have to take medication and, I don't know, have people think different of me," he said.

He added, "I mean, I'm already black and gay, like, damn, God," he joked. "Gay, bipolar, like I'm living life on extreme hard mode.

However, he now feels that getting help has made a positive difference.

The Old Town Road and Montero hitmaker said he's enjoying life more and focusing on his recovery.

"But on a serious note, I'm doing much better, I'm feeling better, I'm creating freely, and there's less fear in my heart. I'm just smelling the roses."

During the video, he also thanked fans for supporting him through a difficult period. Although he said he is not yet ready to fully return to the spotlight, he confirmed that new music is on the way.

"I've been doing music for seven years now," Lil Nas X said in switching gears near the end of the clip. "I wanted to let you guys know there is new music on the way."

The Industry Baby singer ended his message by thanking supporters and saying he hopes to continue making both his fans and himself proud.
