Danny Simmons, brother of Russell Simmons and founder of Rush Arts, passes away at 72

Danny Simmons, the brother of Rev Run and Russell Simmons, has passed away at the age of 72.

He was a renowned abstract expressionist painter, poet, published author, philanthropist, and co-founded the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation with his brothers in 1995.

Russell announced the devastating news of his elder brother’s passing on Instagram on behalf of his family.

The 68-year-old entrepreneur and writer wrote, “It is with a profound sense of loss that we honor and celebrate the life of Danny Simmons Jr., a beacon of love and creativity.”

Danny “was not just a brother, father, uncle, grandfather, and loving husband; he was a vibrant artist, dedicated supporter of creatives, and a cherished friend.”

“Though he has transitioned from this world, his legacy of kindness, generosity, and artistic brilliance will forever shine brightly in our hearts. The family respectfully asks for privacy during this time,” Russell concluded.

Notably, this statement comes after the Beans are Better hitmaker paid emotional tribute to Danny on social media, calling him “my best friend.”

He admitted, “His poetry, art, and ideas shaped how we think and gave us the freedom to dream beyond limits.”

Danny “cared deeply about the underserved communities of color and encouraged us to give back....he founded the rush arts foundation which he chaired for 32 years Providing art education and support for thousands of young people throughout the years And the rush art gallery provided a place for artists of color to feature their art ... many became famous and successful.”

“He taught me how to be a better human being and how to be a man,” Russell concluded.

It is pertinent to mention that Danny Simmons, whose cause of death is unknown, is survived by his wife, Keia Simmons, and his son, Jamel Simmons, who is pursuing his career in acting.
