The UK has officially announced the social media ban for under-16s on Monday, marking the ban as the world’s most far-reaching online restrictions to date.

According to PM Keir Starmer briefing in the press conference, the sweeping changes reflect “Britain values”, aiming to protect children from the growing menace of social media apps and curb the influence of big technology companies.

"A full ban is the right choice... I am not prepared to compromise on the safety and happiness of our children," the prime minister asserted.

“This will change the conversations that parents have and the expectations of children over time. It will make a huge difference, it will make our children safer, it will make our children happier, it will give them more time, more security, more freedom to grow up, more opportunity.”

"Is there a situation in the offline world where you would just let your child pair up with a stranger, an adult that you don't know anything about? No, so we're taking action on that," Starmer added.

New Rules and Scope

Under this newly announced ban, the under-16s will be blanketly blocked from using major social media networks. These platforms include, TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, X, Reddit, YouTube and Facebook. However, WhatsApp and Signal messaging apps would not be added in the list.

Besides these social media platforms, the government announced to take action against live streaming and gaming services which let children talk to strangers.

Platforms not subject to a complete ban will experience strict feature restrictions by details for under 16s and under-17s in some cases.

The government is reviewing rules to implement overnight curfews and breaks in infinite scrolling for all under-18s, alongside an outright ban on under-18s using romantic or sexual AI chatbots

Implementation timeline

According to the UK government, the social media ban coupled with associated functional restrictions are officially coming to effect in spring 2027.

"We hope to pass regulation before Christmas, and therefore to bring the ban ‌into force in the early part of next year, probably about springtime," Prime Minister Keir Starmer said.

The government had already introduced legislation allowing it to take this kind of action as per Starmer.

What coming next

The UK regulator Ofcom will conduct a rapid review of age verification technologies. The survey will oblige the platforms to implement highly effective age assurance measures than simple “tick-box” declarations.

Under the broader Online Safety Act, Ofcom already holds enforcement powers, with non-compliant platforms facing fines up to £18 million or 10% of qualifying global revenue.
