Ranveer Singh breaks silence on 'Kantara' mimicry backlash
Ranveer Singh's mimicry of Rishab Shetty's portrayal in 'Kantara' did not sit well with some fans
After intense backlash, Ranveer Singh has tendered an apology to fans who say he has hurt their sentiments by mimicking Rishab Shetty's scene in Kantara's climax, in which a deity possessed him.
Taking to Instagram Story, the Bollywood star pens a note, “My intention was to highlight Rishabh's incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it would take to perform that particular scene in the way that he did, for which he has my utmost admiration.”
“I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition, and belief in our country. If I've hurt anyone's sentiments, I sincerely apologise," he concludes.
His controversial act came at the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. Videos of the event went viral, showing Ranveer on stage heaping praise on Rishah, who was in the audience, for his performance in Kantara.
"I watched Kantara Chapter 1 in theatres, and Rishab, it was an outstanding performance, especially when the female ghost (Chamundi daiva) enters your body — that shot was amazing," the actor gushed.
But here is where the controversy sparked when Ranveer moved to imitate the scene. This, however, drew a chuckle from the Kannadan actor, but left a section of fans in fury.
Some online also took offence at the Bajirao Mastani star calling the daivas, who are, overall, forest gods, "ghosts."
Adding insult to injury, a video surfaced showing Rishab warning Ranveer not to imitate his act, which Ranveer had attempted earlier in the show.
A police complaint against him has also been filed, alleging that the actor has hurt their religious sentiments.
