Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's first appearance riding solo after titles snatched
Andrew’s 50 year lease unravels after King Charles' push
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor once a familiar sight galloping through Windsor Great Park, has been spotted on horseback for the first time since 3 October.
His last public appearance was at The Duchess of Kent’s funeral at Westminster Cathedral on 16 September, a solemn reminder of how long he’s been out of the royal spotlight.
For the first time since losing all his royal titles, styles, and honours last month, he was enjoying a brisk ride in the grounds of Windsor Castle looking every bit the former duke in khaki and black helmet.
The 65-year-old, once Duke of York, kept things low key with riding trousers and a female groom in tow as he trotted along the iconic Long Walk near the castle gates.
The outing comes in the wake of a dramatic royal reshuffle that saw Andrew relinquish his 30-room Royal Lodge and prepare for a quieter life on the King’s Sandringham estate in Norfolk next year.
The fall from grace follows a series of scandals linked to Jeffrey Epstein, including accusations of sexual abuse by Virginia Giuffre claims Andrew denies.
Once a fixture of the royal spotlight, Andrew has been largely out of public view since 2019, after a controversial BBC Newsnight interview about his friendship with Epstein.
Yet fresh emails suggest the former prince stayed in touch with the disgraced financier well past 2010, fueling public fascination and eyebrow-raising gossip.
Even on horseback, the former Duke’s royal ride seems far from the fairy tale life once enjoyed at Windsor.
Andrew's Royal Lodge was once his personal kingdom, secured by a “cast-iron” lease with more than 50 years still to run.
Relinquishing it, however, wasn’t as simple as handing over the keys. After careful negotiations with the King’s representatives, he finally served formal notice to surrender the lease.
