United States President Donald Trump has indicated that he plans to meet his staunch critic, New York City’s mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, November 16, 2025, President Trump said, “The mayor of New York, I will say, would like to meet with us. We’ll work something out.”

Later, the White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt clarified that the president was talking about Mamdani - the Democratic party mayor-elect who defeated Trump-endorsed former governor Andrew Cuomo by nine percentage points.

She added, “We want to see everything work out well for New York.”

Trump and Mamdani have previously exchanged some heated remarks, the president also threatened to deport the Ugandan-born 34-year-old politician.

Mamdani has also slammed Trump during his victory speech, stating that he wanted New Yorkers to show the country how to defeat the president.

He also pushed against the Trump administration’s anti-immigrant agenda, saying, “New York will remain the city of immigrants, built and powered by immigrants and from now on, led by an immigrant.”

But now, both seem to be breaking the ice to work together for the betterment of their hometown.

A day after his victory speech, Mamdani said that he would be willing to work with anyone, even the president, if it helps the New Yorkers.

However, Mamdani or his team have not yet reacted to the latest Trump statement.
