King Charles plants seeds for innovation to power AI and science
Crown Estate promises science boom at Harwell East
King Charles is taking a bold step into the future with the acquisition of a 221-acre plot in Oxfordshire, marking the start of what officials are calling an “ambitious” AI and science project.
The site, currently farmland, is set to be transformed with plans for 400 new homes**, alongside a cutting-edge office, laboratory, and factory.
Strategically located next to the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, the project forms part of the Crown Estate’s broader vision to support the UK’s science and technology sector while fostering innovation and sustainable development.
Dan Labbad, Chief Executive of the Crown Estate, has hailed the project as a game changer for UK science and innovation.
“The UK’s science, innovation, and technology community is pushing the boundaries in areas from AI to advanced manufacturing,” he said.
“But to realise their full potential, they need specialised lab facilities and housing. Harwell East aims to create the space for world-class science to flourish, fuelling growth and success not just regionally, but across the entire country.”
The ambitious development forms part of the Crown Estate’s £1.5 billion investment plan over the next 15 years, dedicated to advancing the UK’s science, technology, and innovation sectors.
With Harwell East, the initiative takes a major stride forward, promising cutting edge facilities, new homes, and a hub for pioneering research.
