Torrential rain triggers deadly floods in Mexico, killing 44
Heavy rains in Mexico leave nearly 44 people dead, dozens missing
The severe floods and landslides resulting from torrential rainfall in Mexico caused a significant loss of life and widespread damage, killing nearly 44 people, as reported by Al-Jazeera.
According to reports, the State of Hidalgo in eastern Mexico was one of the most affected areas with 16 deaths reported.
Heavy rainfall on Thursday and Friday, October 9 and 10, caused rivers to surge beyond their banks.
Concerning the situation, thousands of houses were damaged or destroyed as floodwaters hurtled down streets, carrying cars and blocking highways with debris, which also caused power outages.
In this connection, Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that the government has deployed 5,400 personnel to help clear roads and provide aid to affected communities.
Naval troops are actively helping with evacuations as well as recovery efforts across the flood-affected areas.
The state's governor has said that an estimated 80,000 people have been affected by the weather in Puebla alone.
The owner of a coffee shop in one of the affected areas told Reuters, "The flood reached a height of one and a half meters. Everything was flooded, including the kitchen, bathroom, restaurant, and the shop, which is now in terrible condition."
