Kristen Wiig reacts to the unexpected success of 'Bridesmaid'
'Bridesmaid' was released in April, 2011 and was helmed by Paul Feig
Kristen Wiig, the star of Palm Royale, recently reflected on the unexpected success of her 2011 movie Bridesmaids on Amy Poehler's Good Hang podcast.
Wiig recalled that after the film's opening weekend, the studio seemed unimpressed, saying, "Well, we tried."
She added, "We just thought, like, that was it. And then I think just more and more people kept seeing it and then it kind of happened later."
The film's director, Paul Feig, shared a similar sentiment last year, revealing that he felt pressure to ensure the film's success, as it was predicted to underperform.
Despite initial doubts, Bridesmaids went on to earn over $300 million worldwide and received two Academy Award nominations.
The film's success marked a significant milestone for female-led comedies, paving the way for future projects.
Poehler praised Bridesmaids, saying, "It still remains a lot of people's favourite comedy and it's still a spec for what it looks like to have a bunch of women in a film together writing their own material."
The film's impact extends beyond its box office success. Bridesmaids has become a cultural phenomenon, with its memorable characters and quotable lines still widely referenced today.
The film's influence can be seen in many subsequent female-led comedies, which have followed in its footsteps.
