Prince William has revealed he is encouraging all three of his children to learn musical instruments, calling music “crucial” for young people.

But while he praised the power of rhythm, William himself was quick to step away from the spotlight when invited to join in.

During a visit to The Oasis Village in Tulse Hill, south London, the heir to the throne dropped into the music studio to meet teenagers supported by Spiral Skills, a youth organisation in Lambeth that recently expanded its outreach thanks to a grant from William’s Homewards Fund.

16 year old teenager Django Brooke invited the Prince to try the drums, but William laughed off the offer.

“I’m definitely not a drummer,” he joked. “I’m happy to see you do it. If my youngest was here, he’d have a go, because he’s practising at the moment. But I’d love to hear you do it, thank you for asking.”

After applauding Django’s performance, William quipped, “And that’s why you play, and I don’t!”

The Prince also spoke about his own musical journey, admitting he dabbled in piano, trumpet, and drums as a youngster but struggled because he couldn’t read music.

“That was my biggest weakness,” he said. “I had to memorise every tune, and it just fell away.”

While William may not have taken up the sticks himself, it seems Prince Louis and perhaps George and Charlotte too could be the ones keeping the family beat alive.

Prince William has shared a glimpse into life at Adelaide Cottage, revealing that all three of his children are already finding their rhythm.

“I make sure my children learn music because I love music and it’s crucial, really important,” the Prince of Wales said during his visit to a youth music project in south London.

According to him, Prince George is strumming the guitar, Princess Charlotte is mastering the piano, and little Prince Louis is busy keeping the beat on the drums.

While his children appear to be carrying the Windsor tune forward, William admitted his own skills never quite hit the high note.

Symphony Studios founder Seth Pinnock, who hosted the royal at The Oasis Village, explained, “He said he couldn’t play drums well. He told us he had learned drums and keyboards but couldn’t read music, so it was tricky for him.”

Still, William hinted that the next generation may have better luck. With George, Charlotte, and Louis already picking up instruments, the Prince joked they might one day find themselves practising in studios like these a future royal band in the making.
