Global Sumud Flotilla attacked by drone in Tunisian waters
Global Sumud Flotilla is by far the largest peaceful mission by nearly 1,000 activists from around 44 countries to break the siege of Gaza
Global Sumud Flotilla, an international group of civilian activists bound for Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid amid ongoing genocide of Palestinians, said that one of their boats was attacked by a drone on Monday, September 8, 2025.
The activists who are on a mission to break the siege of Gaza said that the incident occurred when the boat was docked at the Tunisian port of Sidi Bou Said and fortunately no one was injured in the attack.
The Tunisian National Guard dismissed the claims of the attack saying there was no evidence to support the claim. Based on the initial investigation, the authorities concluded that the fire on the boat started due to a cigarette or a lighter.
A series of videos shared by the group on social media platform Instagram revealed the damage sustained by the "family vessel" due to the alleged drone strike. One of the videos clearly shows something like a burning fireball coming from the sky and striking the vessel.
The civilian activists have also scheduled a press conference for today, Tuesday, September 9 to provide more details regarding the attack.
In another statement, the flotilla consisting of prominent figures including Greta Thunberg confirmed the attack and said, “Acts of aggression aimed at intimidating or derailing our mission will not deter us.”
It further added, “Our peaceful mission to break the siege on Gaza and stand in solidarity with its people continues with determination and resolve.”
Irish actor Liam Cunningham, best known for his role in Game of Thrones also reacted to the drone attack. He wrote on X, “Not only was this an attack on the flotilla, it was an attack on Tunisian territory and an attack on Portugal. The ship ‘FAMILY’ travelled under a Portuguese flag.”
The Gaza bound flotilla is by far the largest peaceful mission by nearly 1,000 activists from around 44 countries to break the siege of Gaza amid ongoing genocide of Palestinians by the occupying Zionist forces.
