An Australian woman charged of killing her three relatives with deadly mushrooms
Erin Patterson, who murdered three of her in-laws with a meal of toxic mushrooms last month, allegedly made an attempt to kill her husband by serving poisoned pasta, sandwich wrap and chicken curry, evidence showed when a judge allowed its disclosure on Friday.
The jury has disclosed crucial information regarding the mysterious incident which occurred last month.
She lured her mother-in-law Gail Patterson, father-in-law Don Patterson and Gail’s sister Heather Wilkinson to have lunch with them and served poisoned servings of Beef Wellington that contained deadly expired poisonous mushrooms.
The 50-year-old was reportedly charged with three counts of murder and five counts of being involved in murder attempt case in 2023.
Additional counts were imposed on her regarding four more cases, confirmed by husband Simon Patterson.
Justice Christopher, who was previously in charge of this case, emphasizes that it should be split into two separate trials, before the commencement of legal proceedings.
He dropped the attempted murder charges related to Simon Patterson on the first trial.
While the alleged multiple attempts made on her husband’s life in 2021 and 2022 were never ascertained by the jury.
Simon Patterson told in his pre-trial hearing in Melbourne, “After the first time I got sick, I had the idea I got sick from Erin’s food.”
He further explained to the court regarding the series of illnesses that happened with him from his wife’s cooking that includes a chicken curry, penne bolognese and a chicken wrap.
By taking poisonous food, he was close to death and became so ill that he was temporarily paralyzed, court heard at the time.
According to the judge Christopher William Beale in the Supreme Court of Victoria has ordered the quelling of the pre-trial material to protect Paterson’s appeal rights.
He said, “Open justice is a fundamental concern of our criminal justice jurisdiction.”
Though, Patterson maintained her innocence throughout the process, with her defense community calling the deaths as a terrible incident. She did not issue any emotional appeal for being involved in a number of alleged murder attempts.
The next hearing of the case is to be expected on August 25, where the victim’s narrative will be listened and read.
According to the Associated Press, Patterson’s lawyers confirmed that they will appeal her convictions.
Erion has to bear maximum penalties of life in prison for three murder cases and 25 years for the count of attempted murder cases simultaneously.
