France's largest wildfire turns greenland into ashes
40,000 acres engulfed in flames, multiple houses damaged in nearby residential area
France, the land of love, is having its worst days at home as the country is battling with its largest wildfire since the 1949’s deadliest fire, killed one person and 13 people are injured after burning the around 40,000 acres of French mainland.
The tragic climate incident started near Corbieres region in south France and spread instantly despite efforts made by 2100 firefighters on the spot.
The mayor of Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse, Xavier de Volontat, said, “It’s very sad to think about the image we are going to give of our Corbières region.”
“The region devastated landscapes, desperate women and men, it is not about just today or tomorrow, but for weeks and months to come in future. It will take years to rebuild everything,” the French commune mayor added.
Regional admin Christian Pouget shared an update: “The battle continues, we have a fire that is not yet under control.”
The cause of the disaster is not yet identified but it might have been fueled by a week long dry and hot weather and it slowed down for a while through overnight calm winds and cooler temperature in Aude region.
The forest fire has traveled into 15 communities in the large mountainous mass of Corbières, resulting in damage of at least 36 houses, death of one native inside home and left 13 wounded.
