'Mafia: The Old Country' game took players back to 1900s Sicily
Mafia: The Old Country game was released for Xbox Series X/S, Windows PC, and PlayStation 5 on August 8, 2025. Published by 2K and developed by Hangar 13, the game took players back to 1900s Sicily, where organised crime was born.
The story focuses on the origins of organised crime, a prequel set in 1900s Sicily. The game departed from the open-world design used in Mafia III and returned to a linear story-driven experience.
Enzo Favara, a fictional character and protagonist in the game, survives a difficult childhood as a labourer in Sicily. He joins a crime family led by Don Torrisi. The game explores his journey through the brutal world of organised crime to carve out a better life.
The gameplay is a mixture of third-person shooting, horseback riding, early car travel, stealth, and brawling. According to reviewers, the stealth missions are tough because one has to be sneaky. If you get caught, the mission fails and starts all over again.
The combat system is not about pressing buttons. One has to be smart to choose the right moves, like blocking and dodging. The battles with knives are described as “rock-paper-scissors” because they are so simple and easy to predict.
Mixed feelings prevail among players. One of the reviews said that the game’s story is “predictable and devoid of any surprise.” While other players found it to be a “great story with great character.”
Unreal Engine 5, a powerful game engine, was used to build the game, which allowed the creation of extremely realistic and detailed graphics.
Some players found technical issues such as “stutter” and “dramatic framerate drops” in the game, even with good processors and gaming cards like the RTX 3060/3070 and Ryzen 5/7.
The game runs smoother on PlayStation 5 Pro with a higher resolution and higher frame rate, particularly during cutscenes.
Despite the mixed reviews from the players, the game sold for £44.99 at launch.
