King Charles and Queen Camilla attended an emotional ceremony as the commemorated a key royal figure.
The monarchs, who are currently in Scotland, unveiled a special memorial stone dedicated to the late Queen Elizabeth II during an intimate event to honour her “life of commitment and service to other people”.
Following the event on Wednesday, Buckingham Palace shared an update about the event, in which the King and Queen appeared notably sombre for the poignant event.
“Today, The King and Queen unveiled a Memorial Stone dedicated to the late Queen Elizabeth II at St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh,” King Charles’s Office wrote in a statement shared with highlights.
“Her late Majesty’s deep affection for Scotland and its people was well-known, in particular her love of the Scottish Highlands,” it continued. “St Giles’ Cathedral was the Queen’s final resting place in Scotland, and where thousands queued to pay their respects.”
The service was conducted by Rev Dr Scott Rennie as the black slate stone – which depicts the Scottish Crown and the ER cypher alongside the dates – was unveiled in the spot where Elizabeth’s coffin was lying-in-state for two days, before being transported to London.
Elizabeth was in her Balmoral Castle in Scotland when she breathed her last in September 2022.
