Princess Anne, who has been dubbed as the hardest working royal in the family, got candid about a major challenge that she faces at home.
The 74-year-old royal has continued to support King Charles and the monarchy despite her worrying hospitalisation last year and continued health struggles. She showed strength in her dedication to service, which has been revered by the family.
In her personal life, the monarch’s sister continues to live and manage her sprawling 700-acre estate, Gatcombe Park in Gloucestershire, which she received as a gift from her late mother, Queen Elizabeth in 1976.
Given how well she performs her tasks, the avid equestrian shared challenges she has faced in maintaining her estate home in a rare admission.
She explained that there has to be a “delicate balance” in maintaining the grounds and the plans grown there, as she often hosts equestrian events such as the Festival of British Eventing.
Anne revealed that since she lives on Cotswold brash does not have a lot of plants that survive as the place is “not popular with plants”.
“You’ve just got to live with what’s there and make sure it doesn’t get overwhelmed. I’m not sure that rewilding at scale is necessarily a good idea – it probably is in corners, but if you’re not careful you rewild all the wrong things because they are just the things that are more successful at growing,” she told The Telegraph.
“My biggest row at home is ragwort. Lots of people think that ragwort is absolutely brilliant because butterflies love it, but it’s not good for the horses [it is toxic]. I would say don’t take all the ragwort out, just where the horses are – but it’s quite a delicate balance.”
Ragwort is a UK native that blooms all summer in gardens and can be poisonous to horses and cattle when eaten in large quantities.
She added that since there are “quite a lot of horses” at home, which is why she has to be careful with that.
