Prince William set to make amends during important trip after backlash
Prince William takes on key mission with next appearance in Switzerland
Prince William will be stepping up to show support during a key event after he received criticism for skipping it last time.
The Prince of Wales, formerly the President of the Football Association (FA), is set to travel to Switzerland next month to support the England’s women football team.
The Lionesses will be defending their European Championship title and the future king will be present to lift their spirits during the game, per The Sun report.
William is expected to attend at least one group game. He will also be meeting the team to give his regards before they depart for the tournament, with their first match on July 5.
“He is looking forward to supporting the team and wishing them good luck,” a spokesperson for Prince William said.
Previously, William received criticism from avid football fans when he failed to show up to support the for their match against Spain in the FIFA Women’s World Cup final in 2023. However, William did attend in the 2022 match in Wembley as they won the title.
The Wales family was reportedly on break so William recorded a special message with his daughter, Princess Charlotte, to send them good luck.
“Lionesses want to wish you a huge good luck for tomorrow. We’re sorry we can’t be there in person,” he said in the video while sitting alongside his daughter on a bench.
“But we’re so proud of everything you’ve achieved and the millions you’ve inspired here and around the world,” he continued. “So go out there tomorrow and really enjoy yourselves.”
Charlotte, who was eight then, held a soccer ball in her lap, chimed in, “Good luck, Lionesses!”
The future king – and also a massive Aston Villa fan – is often seen at football matches but mostly for men. Fans pointed out that had it been a men’s final, William would have dropped everything to attend the match.
It appears that William may have considered the critique and is trying to make amends by showing his presence for the Lionesses.
