Harry and Meghan spend $3m a year to stay safe
A newly released documentary has pulled back the curtain on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s high-profile life in California, revealing the true cost of their post royal reinvention.
Set against the backdrop of their sprawling multi million dollar Montecito mansion, the film explores what it calls the couple’s "lavish lifestyle."
Shortly after settling in the U.S., the pair sat down for a headline grabbing interview with Oprah Winfrey, where they shared explosive claims about royal life and detailed the challenges that led to their dramatic departure.
In a revealing Channel 5 documentary titled Harry and Meghan: Where Did The Money Go, royal experts have lifted the lid on the true scale of the Sussexes’ soaring expenses and it’s their jaw dropping Montecito mansion that appears to top the list.
After stepping back from royal duties in 2020, The Duke and Duchess settled into a sprawling $14.65 million estate in California.
But the price tag was only the beginning. The couple reportedly took out a staggering $9.5 million mortgage on the nine bedroom home, with monthly repayments estimated to sit between $50,000 and $100,000.
The 7.4-acre estate, nestled in the heart of Montecito, boasts not only expansive manicured gardens but also a private nursery for their children, a guest house where Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland often stays, and even a rose garden where Meghan is said to enjoy handcutting fresh blooms.
"They're living their lovely, lovely lavish lifestyle," royal expert Emily Andrews observed in the film.
"The nine bathrooms, the little house in the garden, the private school every detail screams luxury."
The eye-watering cost of safety in the Sussexes’ post-royal life has come into sharp focus, with researchers in a new documentary revealing that Prince Harry and Meghan reportedly spend a staggering $3 million each year on personal security alone.
Royal editor of The Mirror, Russell Myers, weighed in on the issue with frank disbelief.
"I don't think they thought it through what leaving their roles and relocating to somewhere like America would really mean for their security,” he explained.
"Harry and Meghan may have anticipated footing part of the bill, but once their official protection was stripped away, they were suddenly staring down a massive, unexpected cost."
