Queen Camilla left fans stunned as she made a surprising appearance at a special event in Bloomsbury to celebrate 30 years of the Women’s Prize for Fiction on Wednesday, June 11.
The Queen hailed the founders of the award for having brought the female voice from the margins of the literary world to its very centre.
The royal family shared the details of Queen Camilla's visit on their official social media accounts with her stunning photos.
The Palace wrote alongside the photos: "The Queen has joined brilliant authors at a special event for the Women’s Prize for Fiction in Bedford Square this afternoon."
The statement continued: "Ahead of their Awards ceremony tomorrow, Her Majesty met this year’s @WomensPrize shortlisted authors, judges and past winners, before addressing guests to congratulate them on the past three decades of incredible storytelling."
It continued: "Congratulations to Bernardine Evaristo, recipient of the first-ever Women’s Prize Outstanding Contribution Award!"
Founder and author Kate Mosse, who invited the Queen to attend the anniversary event, said her presence had been kept secret: “Nobody knew, which is why people were so surprised. If you’re going to lay on the Queen, if it’s not Beyoncé, it’s got to be the actual Queen.”
In the Green Room area, the 77-year-old was introduced to the six authors shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction.
She joked that the competition was stiff between finalists, telling Camilla, “We are trying to take each other out. The Champagne glasses are spiked – there could be one less standing by this afternoon!”
