Cynthia Erivo reveals co-writing original song for Elphaba in ‘Wicked: For Good’
Cynthia Erivo recalled bringing whole ‘Wicked: For Good’ cast and crew to ‘tears’ with song
Cynthia Erivo may have brought the “entire crew” of Wicked: For Good in tears with her musical talents.
The actress has revealed exciting details about her role as Elphaba in the upcoming Wicked films, including co-writing an original song and teasing a more mature storyline.
In a Variety interview, Erivo shared that she collaborated with composer Stephen Schwartz on a new song for Elphaba in the second part of Wicked.
“I collaborated on one of the new songs, and it’s so special to me,” she shares.
“When we filmed it, the entire crew was in tears. I hope audiences are ready — it’s a song that speaks to the heart of who Elphaba is.”
Erivo also hinted at the darker direction of the second film.
“We’re diving deeper into the consequences of the characters’ choices. The story is richer, and the stakes are higher. It’s not just a continuation; it’s a transformation.”
The actress emphasized the importance of challenging traditional notions of good and evil within the Wicked narrative.
“Elphaba isn’t wicked. None of the characters are purely good or bad. They’re flawed, complex, and human,” Erivo says.
“This story asks us to reconsider the labels we place on others and ourselves. It’s about empathy and understanding. The world needs more of that right now.”
In addition to her work on Wicked, Erivo told the outlet that her debut album will be released next year, shortly before the premiere of Wicked: For Good.
“The album is eclectic, blending soul, country, and pop,” she says. “My voice is the backbone — I’ve even used it as an instrument for layering sounds.”
Erivo considers the album a deeply personal project and a therapeutic outlet.
“I’ve worked so hard on this album. It’s an extension of me and a reflection of all the influences that have shaped my life.”
